PLURALISM IN THE AGE OF MEDIA SURVEILLANCE
Presentation by M.T. Karthik
Thursday, February 24, 2004 @ 8pm
From agit-prop to info-prop, culture-jamming and manipulation of media, how can a notion of “true media diversity” combat monolithic corporate media? In the context of 21st century politics, what does it mean to be effective? What have they learned and absorbed? What are the possibilities for counter-narratives?
M.T. Karthik has conducted performance work as art-in-practice in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans and Austin over three decades of sociopolitical engagement. His most recent performance – as News Director and Elections Coordinator for Pacifica station KPFK is documented in a forthcoming book and audio compilation.
His books, audio pieces, text pieces, limited editions and uniques have been placed by the Booklyn Artists Alliance in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Getty Museum, the Milwaukee Public Library, Smith College, Stanford University, New York University, The Otis College of Art and Design, Occidental College and in other archival, educational and private collections. Karthik lives in Los Angeles.
